Ever since Xi Jinping’s assumed his presidency in 2013, China has changed a lot, and with it the world. President Xi has been at the vanguard of repositioning China on the global stage, with the Belt & Road Initiative at the forefront of his presidency’s foreign policy enterprise. Lately, and in particular following the election of Mr Donald Trump as the President of the United States, the honeymoon period seems to be over for President Xi Jinping. Domestic, as well as external challenges are on the rise. In today’s interconnected global arena, it will be of defining importance for China and the world how Xi will manage to handle the monumental challenge of steadying the ship. The recent EU-China Summit has proved to be a success in enhancing relations between the EU and its Asian partner(s). However, questions remain whether this will continue to be the case and how the European elections will impact the future of EU-China relations and the new roadmap for cooperation to be presented at the next EU-China summit.
China correspondent Stefan Blommaert will be presenting his newly published book – The Age of Xi – wherein he addresses internal developments in China, as well as those along the New Silk Road from an international reporter’s perspective. Furthermore, this conference gathers a panel of experts in EU-China relations to discuss the future of EU-China relations post-EU elections. |
