In this EIAS talk with Julian Dierkes we discuss current political transformations in Mongolia, the upcoming 9th of June 2021 Presidential election, the impact of the Constitutional Amendments of 2019, as well as current challenges in Mongolia’s mining sector and its relations with its external partners. 

Dr Julian Dierkes is an associate professor at the Institute of Asian Research (IAR) and School of Public Policy and Global Affairs (SPPGA) at the University of British Columbia. In addition, he co-ordinates the IAR Program on Inner Asia. His research interests focus on Mongolia, in particular on democratization processes, political developments, mining policy especially in Mongolia and Digital Diplomacy. He has been teaching on Mongolian politics at Humboldt University in Berlin and has written extensively on Mongolia with publications for the Asia Pacific Memo, East Asia Forum, the FT’s beyond BRICS, and The Diplomat. Since 2011 he has been cooperating with the professional blog Mongolia Focus, and acted as an election observer in several Parliamentary and Presidential elections in Mongolia since 2008.
