31/10/2019

On 29 October 2019, EIAS welcomed a delegation of Pakistani senior officials as part of the Pakistani senior civil servants’ National Management Course (NMC). EIAS Advisory Board Member Dr Amb (rtd) Alexander Spachis gave a presentation on the EU’s current approach toward security and defence challenges. In his speech, Dr Spachis emphasised the importance of the EU’s peaceful and multilateral approach, in which Member States’ united action and the EU’s cooperation with other regional organisations play a fundamental role. Thereafter, EIAS Senior Associate Mr Andrea Mogni offered a detailed and updated presentation on the EU’s perspective on Climate Change and the EU’s recent energy and environmental policies. Mr Mogni highlighted what the key objectives of the new commission will be and what financial instruments and international partners will contribute to fulfil them. Finally, EIAS CEO Mr Axel Goethals offered some insights on the new EU Commission’s focus on the development of new technologies, especially in the field of digitalization and financial services. The EU’s challenge will be to find a balance between maintaining competitiveness and creating global champions and global guidelines.

The three presentations were followed by a fruitful discussion, which focused also on the EU’s current social challenges, including the role of religion, values and identity.
