EIAS Advisory Board



The Advisory Board consists of all members of the administrative board, in addition to a number of senior experts, bearing expertise on different fields of EU-Asia Relations. The main role of the Advisory Board is to assist the Insitute in setting out the guidelines for the EIAS activities and its general policies.

Sylvain Plasschaert

Sylvain Plasschaert worked at the World Bank, as a fiscal economist and acted frequently as their consultant. He also worked at a Belgian commercial bank, previous to a full-time career at the University of Antwerp and part-time at the Catholic University of Leuven. Amongst other courses, he taught "economic developments in China" for over a quarter of a century.

Now an emeritus professor, he remains actively involved in analysing the Chinese scene. Also a major interest in EU tax policies and international finance.

Theresa Fallon was educated at Loyola University, The University of Chicago and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her area of specialization is energy. In the 1990s she contributed to the Centre for Global Energy Studies in London, and to Cambridge Energy Research Associates, Paris. She wrote on energy and current affairs for the Saudi Arabian Al Eqtisadiah and the International Arab Business Daily. From 1998 to 2003 she was in Moscow where she represented PlanEcon, a research and consulting firm. She lectured at the American Institute of Business and Economics in Moscow. From 2003 to 2007 she worked in Beijing as a researcher and consultant. Inter alia, she delivered presentations at the Chinese Academy of Social Science on the East China Sea dispute between China and Japan and she participated in scenario simulations at the Central Party School. She gave several interviews to the international media including BBC and CNN. She is now based in Brussels and is a Senior Associate with the European Institute of Asian Studies.

David Fouquet had a long career as a journalist covering foreign, security and economic relations for leading publications, such as The Washington Post, Newsweek and Janes Defence Weekly in Washington, London and Brussels. He then became a consultant for major international companies, lecturer and writer concentrating on European-Asian relations since the mid-1990s. He has been involved in EU-sponsored international projects, lectured and participated in conferences throughout Asia and Europe. (More...)

Ms. Lin Goethals holds an MA in International Relations and Political Sciences. Her main focus is on political and diplomatic relations between the EU and Asia, as well as on Youth Policy and Education in Asia and its role in EU-Asia Relations. She is the Project Coordinator of the EU-China Youth Policy Dialogue, a Youth in Action Programme of the European Commission and participated in several activities of the EU-China Year of Youth. As the Programme Director at EIAS, she is in charge of the general coordination of the Institute and its activities, the follow up of projects and other programmes, as well as the conferences and seminars.

Ms. Mylene Dumas has obtained a Degree in Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway College in the University of London. Her main interests are in the realm of EU-India relations, security studies and corporate social responsibility. She is interested in learning about how the cultural habits in Indian society affects national politics and stakeholders in the economy.

Dr. Eduardo Zachary Albrecht obtained his PhD in social anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He is currently an Assistant Professor of International Relations at Pukyong National University in South Korea. His research interest include the relationship between ideology and economic change in Asia.

Mr. Stijn Lambrecht studied at the University of Leuven where he majored in Japanese studies, which included a prolonged stay in Japan. He also obtained a Master in European Politics from the same university. His main focus is on Japan's international relations with its Asian neighbours and the EU. In addition, he is focused on aid policy and China's development.


Alicia Belda

Ms. Alicia Belda holds a five years degree in Political Sciences and Public Administration from the University of Valencia. She also studied one year in Science Po Lyon focusing in international relations. Her main research interests are the political and diplomatic relations between the EU and Asia under four headings: cooperation with developing countries, community-based initiatives for self-reliance, humanitarian relief and rehabilitation in support of human rights and electoral processes.

Ms. Deirdre Westgeest is currently finishing her studies at the University of Maastricht, where she majors in International Relations. As a part of her studies, she spent 6 months at Korea University, Seoul. Her research interests at EIAS lie in the field of East-Asian international relations, Chinese foreign policy as well as China-India dynamics.

Ms. Irene Simone holds a Master in European Law from the Universities of Milan, Szczecin, Montpellier and Barcelona. Her main focus concerns South East Asia, where she has been working for a prolonged period. She is interested in EU-South East Asia cooperation in the fields of sustainable development, humanitarian assistance and climate change.

Mr. Romain Warnault is currently completing the final year of the Sciences Po Toulouse degree in the realm of "International Relations and Crisis Management Studies". He lived for a year in Chongqing (China) where he completed a degree in Chinese. His main focus is on security issues related to China and ASEAN as well as the political dynamics behind them.
