This March, the European Commission published a new communication on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with the aim of making Europe a pole of excellence on CSR. In the context of our globalising world, faced with ever-increasing societal challenges such as how to achieve sustainable development, economic growth and social stability, engaging the corporate community outside the EU is of increasing importance. How can Europe work together with external partners to promote better corporate responsibility worldwide?

The European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS) is honoured to welcome Dr C.S. Venkata Ratnam to its premises to discuss the importance of CSR in India. Dr. Ratnam has been a professor at Andhra University, Waltair and faculty member at the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad. He also worked as a professor with the International Management Institute, and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Graz, Austria; the Japan Institute of Labour, Tokyo; Manchester Business School, United Kingdom; and McGill University in Canada.

He has been a consultant to the International Labour Organization, the Asian Productivity Organization and several national Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and has worked with several employees and workers organizations in Asia and Europe. Dr. Ratnam is Secretary of the Indian Society of Labour Economics, Founder Secretary of the Indian Industrial Relations Association and sits on the Executive Committee of the International Industrial Relations Association. During the course of his career he has published over 20 books and 100 research papers.

The International Management Institute (IMI) was established in 1981, in collaboration with International Management Institute Geneva, to meet the widely felt need for internationally oriented management education/ training for managers at all levels in industry, government and public systems. The Institute enjoys full support of the corporate sector as well as the Government of India. Today, IMI holds a place of distinction among the premier schools of management for being the first corporate sponsored business school with strong international orientation in India.
