Taiwan occupies a significant strategic position in East Asia, and plays a key role in regional stability and economic development.  People and governments in the region are troubled by the maritime territorial disputes and the overlapping national interests. Meanwhile, China is building airstrips and ports in the South China Sea, which worries neighboring countries. In her lecture, Ms Lu will outline the current strategic environment in the Asia-Pacific, with a focus on the maritime disputes, the rising tensions in the region, the pivotal role of Taiwan in the region and emphasise the importance of soft power in Taiwan’s foreign policy for a peaceful strategic environment.

Ms Lu is a writer, freedom fighter and antinuclear activist. Born in 1944 and graduated from National Taiwan University, University of Illinois, and Harvard University, Ms Lu established herself as the founder of feminist movement in Taiwan. Later she became one of the leaders in the opposition movement calling for democracy and an end to the Kuomintang authoritarian rule.  In 1993 Ms Lu was elected to be a member of Legislative Yuan and in 1997 to be the Magistrate of Taoyuan County. In 2000 she was elected the first female Vice President and in 2004 the first Vice President reelected in Taiwan.
