Trade negotiations have emerged as a key mechanism through which the European Union has sought to build linkages and closer cooperation with ASEAN and its Member States. But what are the impacts of such agreements for the people of Southeast Asia? How can European policymakers take human rights concerns into account when negotiating political and economic agreements? In a region where the United Nations has expressed concerns about the shrinking space that civil society operates in, how can civil society be involved more efficiently in these negotiations, seeing how their role is crucial in assessing the vulnerability of the social groups most exposed to competition?

Join Members of Parliament from Southeast Asia for a discussion of these issues. The MPs, members of ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, will provide a unique Southeast Asian perspective on European policy questions, joined by representatives from the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) and the European Institute for Asian Studies.
