Discussion and Q&A |
Connecting the grid: the way forward for renewable energy in Asia and Europe
Increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity mix poses similar challenges in Europe and Asia. One crucial challenge is to create a flexible grid that can transport electricity over vast distances and bring this energy to the consumer. After all, a larger share of renewables is expected to increase the variability and intermittency of electricity production. Thanks to the exponential growth of renewable energies during the last decade, they have become an ideal component in the energy mix to provide for more energy security and to fight climate change. Various smart grid technologies enable a more efficient flow of electricity and can increase the portion of renewable energy. In addition, larger grid networks, which can interconnect grid networks to enable electricity from renewable energy in order to move from region to region, are also under development.
This EIAS Briefing Seminar will discuss these developments, explore new ideas and give attention to policy making approaches in the EU and Asia, in order to move this agenda forward.
This meeting is organised back to back with the Climate Parliament Brussels Forum, 7-8 March 2013.
